Downtown Las Vegas is a wild mix of old-school charm and modern-day debauchery. It’s a popular destination in the city with its iconic neon signs, historic casinos, and Fremont Street Experience.
Choosing a hotel to book in Downtown Vegas can be a difficult minefield to navigate. Most of the hotels are over 40 years old and present various challenges to hotel guests.

I can confidently say that the Circa Resort & Casino stands out among downtown Vegas hotels. The resort ticks all the boxes for those seeking a high-quality, adults-only (21+) hotel.
As someone who takes their hotel room quality seriously, I was pleasantly surprised by the classy rooms and suites at Circa. My view facing Stadium Swim was awesome, although I must mention that the DJ music during the day can cause the windows to thump – something to consider if you’re looking for quiet daytime relaxation.
When it comes to dining, Circa certainly doesn’t disappoint. As someone who’s tried and tested many restaurants downtown, I can attest that 8 East and Saginaw’s Delicatessen serve some of the best food downtown. If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience, Barry’s Downtown Prime is an absolute delight.
But it’s not just about food; the resort also provides stunning views and an extensive menu at Legacy Club, where I’ve enjoyed many cocktails and whiskeys. For gamblers, the Overhang Bar is an easy favorite. I once hit a royal flush there, adding a dazzling stroke of luck to my Vegas experience.
However, the cherry on top is undoubtedly Stadium Swim. An impressive dayclub-style pool complete with a colossal screen for all your sports-viewing needs. Where the Golden Nugget truly shines, however, is its array of dining and drinking experiences. My personal favorite, the Cadillac Mexican Kitchen, offers a relaxed ambiance and delicious fare. For those seeking a more upscale dining experience, Vic & Anthony’s and Saltgrass Steak House will not disappoint.
As for amenities, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. The unique Shark Tank Pool, where guests can ride a water slide through a real shark tank, is a must-try experience. I found the staff to be incredibly accommodating and the rooms, while basic, provided just the right level of comfort for a balance of budget and quality. It’s important to remember that the Plaza doesn’t parade itself as a luxury hotel, but what it does offer is a genuine, authentic downtown Vegas experience.
Over the past couple of years, the Plaza has significantly elevated its culinary game. It has expanded Oscar’s Steakhouse, introduced The Sand Dollar Downtown, Carousel Bar, and Pinkbox Doughnuts, and maintained a consistent level of quality at its affordably priced casino bars.
What sets the Plaza apart, though, is its bustling atmosphere and commitment to entertainment. The rooftop pool, although small, is a charming spot to enjoy an afternoon. The hotel hosts various events throughout the year and is rumored to be planning a show in 2024. The Sand Dollar offers live entertainment every night, making for a vibrant, exciting stay.
Even if you choose to lodge elsewhere, I highly recommend a visit to the Plaza. The Carousel Bar and Oscar’s Steakhouse are worth the trip alone. When it comes to amenities and room quality, The D delivers an average but satisfactory experience. The rooms, though not standout, are comfortable enough for a good night’s rest after an exhilarating evening of partying.
The D is home to Andiamo Steakhouse, an establishment I’ve found to be one of the best in the downtown area. Additionally, the hotel offers a range of menu items at Bacon Nation and American Coney Island. I’ve enjoyed many gaming (and drinking) hours at Vue Bar and BarCanada, both located upstairs.
The pool may not be the most luxurious, but guests are given two complimentary passes to the stunning Stadium Swim at the nearby Circa.

In terms of accommodations, the Downtown Grand stands out amongst its downtown counterparts. The hotel offers a diverse selection of rooms, from newly constructed to tastefully remodeled, all promising a comfortable and serene resting place. The hotel maintains a high quality standard across all rooms, ensuring that the comfort of your stay will be paralleled by few downtown.
The Downtown Grand may not boast a wide array of internal amenities, but what it does offer, it executes exceptionally well. The low-key Freedom Beat café serves a delightful American-style menu, accompanied by live music that adds a pleasant rhythm to your dining experience. The Furnace casino bar is a perfect spot for food and gaming, offering reasonably priced bar food that pairs surprisingly well with video poker.

This hotel is one of the few that doesn’t charge a resort fee, making it an excellent option for those mindful of their expenditure.
During one of my stays at Four Queens, I discovered that while the rooms might be basic, they offered enough comfort for a good night’s rest. The beds were decent, and the addition of a mini-fridge and a coffee pot was a well-appreciated touch that’s becoming increasingly rare in hotels these days.
A piece of advice from my experiences: the south tower tends to be quieter, making it a better choice if tranquility is a priority for you.
One area where Four Queens truly excels is its assortment of dining options. For travelers with a taste for fine dining, the neighboring Golden Nugget and Circa are just a short stroll away. However, if you’re after a cozy bar with a welcoming staff, the Filament Bar within the hotel is a hidden gem — their margaritas are a particular favorite of mine.

Despite its historical roots and countless remodels, El Cortez has admirably maintained its room quality to contemporary standards. Yes, you’ll find the rooms to be a bit different from the typical modern hotel, but therein lies the charm. Each room is a piece of history, while still providing a comfortable, clean, and affordable stay.
Amenities at El Cortez, much like the hotel itself, are a blend of the nostalgic and the contemporary. During my stay, the room cost me around $40 after taxes and fees, reflecting the value-for-money proposition Golden Gate offers.
As for amenities, it’s essential to note that Golden Gate does not feature on-site dining options. For meals, you’ll need to take a short walk to another nearby casino. However, the hotel does have two bars, Bar Prohibition and OneBar, both of which add to the lively atmosphere.

The hotel is currently undergoing a significant transformation, swapping its antique-style for a more modern facelift. Despite the ongoing changes, guests often find themselves pleasantly surprised by the distinctive décor and the intriguing blend of old and new. Each room at Main Street Station is comfortably furnished, reflecting an eye for detail without compromising on modern amenities.
However, one aspect that some visitors might find a letdown are the limited food and beverage options. The Triple 7 Restaurant & Microbrewery, a place I frequent a few times a year, serves up some delicious pub fare and beer, providing a pleasant culinary experience. The Garden Court Buffet may not be the top tier in terms of dining, but its affordability makes it a viable option for guests watching their budget. Besides, the casino bar is well-stocked and staffed by attentive bartenders.
Main Street Station is not just about the beds and the brews; it’s about the stories embedded within the hotel and casino’s walls. The venue is peppered with antiques and historical pieces, including a section of the Berlin Wall conspicuously placed in the men’s restroom.

This historical hotel is in the heart of Downtown Vegas, is a portal to the past and a boon for those seeking an offbeat experience without resort fees.
However, it’s crucial to set your expectations right – this place is less about luxury and more about reliving the charisma of old Vegas. The hotel rooms at Binion’s Hotel Apache are reminiscent of a bygone era, which contributes both to its charm and its limitations. While the vintage design might appeal to those seeking a retro vibe, be aware that the room quality might not meet modern standards of comfort and style.
For those intrigued by the supernatural, the hotel’s haunted reputation might either pique your interest or make for an unsettling night. In my experience, it’s worth dropping by for the atmosphere, but perhaps consider staying elsewhere if you’re prioritizing comfort and spaciousness over nostalgia.
The real highlights at Binion’s, though, are Top of Binion’s Steakhouse and Whiskey Licker Up Saloon, a personal favorite of mine, both offer excellent dining.
The casino, maintaining its vintage flair, is a fun playground for gamblers seeking an authentic Vegas experience. However, if you’re looking for a more diversified entertainment roster, you need to venture beyond the hotel premises.
Binion’s is worth a visit for the unique, old-world charm, the no-resort-fee policy, and the ghost hunting opportunities. But if you’re in the market for luxury accommodations, you will want to look elsewhere in Downtown Vegas.
Downtown Vegas Hotels To Avoid
There are a couple of Downtown Vegas hotels I would recommend avoiding.
Like other downtowns, there are many hotels and motels throughout the city. It would be best if you avoided several hotels close to the Fremont Street Experience.
These include the Bridger Inn Hotel, Villa Inn Motel, Carson View Suites, Dragon Motel, Alpine Motel, City Center Motel, and others.
There are a lot of reasons why you should avoid these hotels. Many of them are far away from Fremont Street’s tourist parts or in bad parts of downtown.
Instead, stick to a casino hotel or resort for a safer, more pleasant vacation.
Conclusion
Circa is hands down the best Downtown Vegas hotel. It opened in 2020 and is the first new construction downtown in multiple decades.
I was blown away by the quality of my hotel room at Circa. I love Stadium Swim and the massive sportsbook. There’s no other place like Legacy Club downtown. I enjoy eating at 8 East and Saginaw’s often. I’ve won a fair bit of money in the casino and have always been treated well by all the staff.
Circa nailed it. It’s modern, but you can feel Vegas in its blood. If you can afford it, stay at Circa.
